There’s no denying clogs have been on trend for more than a hot minute. But despite many a season in the spotlight, the appeal of these wooden shoes shows no sign of abating in 2023.
Once reserved for Dutch farmers in the early 1300s, clogs quickly shook off their practical connotations. Fast forward to the 1970s – the era of disco dancing – and the wooden heels became the party shoe of choice for celebrities and pop stars alike: Jane Birkin, Bianca Jagger and ABBA were all fans. Worn sans socks, clogs were (and still are) the perfect accompaniment to flared pants, boho maxi dresses and structured trouser suits. Thirty years on and the 2000s ‘ugly’ shoe trend brought with it another clog renaissance, and with all things Noughties (we’re talking denim maxi skirts, baby tees and cargo pants) making a comeback in 2023, it’s hardly surprising these shoes have returned to our radar.
But the Y2k renaissance isn’t the only reason for this shoe’s resurgence, lockdown is probably also to thank for our recent practical, uber comfortable footwear choices. We were all living in sliders, the much-coveted Birkenstock Bostons and even – miraculously – the ugly-turned-street cool Crocs during that unprecedented time. And when life finally went back to normal, it seems old habits die hard. However, this year the clog is more sexy than sensible thanks to the addition of platform heels, studded leather and statement buckles to add a touch of flare.
