Gold co*cktail FAQ

How Do You Serve a Black Gold Whiskey co*cktail?

This drink is served chilled “straight-up” which means shaken with ice and then strained into the glass. We don’t recommend that this co*cktail be served over “rocks” (ice) because the drink will lose its flavor as it’s diluted by the ice.

co*cktails served over ice are generally drank a little quicker. This Bootleg Whiskey Recipe is meant to be sipped.

What’s the difference between whiskey and bourbon?

Bourbon is a type of whiskey. Whiskey is made from fermented grains and then aged in oak barrels. Bourbon must be made from at least 51% corn and aged in charred oak barrels.

Can I use bourbon in this recipe?

Yes. You can use any whiskey or bourbon that you prefer. That can be rye or wheat whiskey or bourbon. Irish or American, it is all about your preference. The whiskey you use will have a specific taste in this whiskey co*cktail recipe. My recommendation is to choose a smooth whiskey which is usually a lower proof. High-proof whiskeys can taste and feel “hot” or burn in your mouth.

A few moderately priced whiskeys that tend to be smooth include:
Buffalo Trace Bourbon
Maker’s Mark Bourbon

Tips to Make the Perfect Black Gold Whiskey co*cktail

For a perfectly chilled co*cktail, make sure you shake it in the ice thoroughly before straining it. Don’t skimp on this step even though it is tempting.

If you use a whiskey that doesn’t taste good, it’s not going to get better mixed into a co*cktail.

A vegetable peeler makes great orange rind strips. Don’t press too hard so very little of the pith sticks to the strip.

Our alcoholic beverages used to consist primarily of a lite beer. From there we started enjoying the microbrews a little more, which we still do, but now we have moved into sipping co*cktails like this Gold co*cktail.

John came up with the Bootleg Black Gold Whiskey co*cktail recipe, and if we still had to worry about “Prohibition”, I’d probably have a still in my basem*nt just so I could sip one now and then.
