I put Cummings in the upper eschelon of rock god voices. In the company of Marriot, Kooper and Morrison. Great pipes. Plenty of respect for the Guess Who here.

Seconded. BC had a fine voice.

Yeah my bad. I never looked up the discography of the Guess Who, or even BTO to be honest. Heck I don't even have a BTO record in my collection anymore. My kid collection got traded into the used record store a long long time ago. The radio versions of Taking Care of Business and American Woman sound so similar in terms of singer to me, I had assumed it was Bachman. Heck he isn't even the lead in BTO either, and I should have recognized that. But then again, you don't hear many BTO songs on the radio anymore except Taking Care of Business.

But I am going to have to find a few more Guess Who albums I think, I had a great time listening to this one.

Burton Cummings was the lead singer for the Guess Who. He also wrote or co-wrote most of the songs. He was not a member of BTO.
Share the Land and American Woman are their best two albums IMO. The best tracks from these two records made up most of the "Best Of" album. The other three racks from the "Best Of" album were taken from the Canned Wheat album. Although the song "No Time" was later redone on the American Woman album also.

We get more BTO songs on the radio up here. They fit that Cancon bill perfectly for the classic rock stations.

Bachman has a good radio show on CBC that you might enjoy. It's called Vinyl Tap. Not sure if you can get CBC online in your neck of the woods, though. Are you close enough to pull in CBC Vancouver over FM?

Interesting that you should post this Mr.P. I've just lately been trying to decide on which GW album to start with to add them to my music collection. I always liked them back them and want to start fresh and like them again.

I was always a fan of BTO also, from the begining. But imho their best album is also the most overlooked, their first one. It kicks some serious ass and is (again IMHO) much better than their later work.

If you want to hear an interesting bit of GW/BTO in-between history check out Randy Bachman's 1970 solo album "Axe". Entirely instrumental, it isn't in any way a smash hit but does show where Randy was going after he left the Guess Who. Pretty much all of the best riffs that show up later in BTO are somewhere to be found while wandering through Axe.

For years I've been trying to find copies of "Brave Belt" and "Bachman Turner Bachman", both short lived iterations of what happened between Axe and BTO. I've heard a few songs and some of it is good, some isn't so. But an interesting insight into the history of the time. Just next to impossible to find.

Burton Cummings has a great voice and is instantly recognizable as "The Guess Who" sound. I grew up with this stuff and it's high time that I added some Guess Who to my collection. So which one should I buy first?

Cheers,
James

Bachman released an album last year, billed as a Blues album. Bought it but really didn't get into it.

Edit: I should add that it's more of a Rock than Blues album to me, so that was a bit of a disappointment. I like both genres, was looking forward to a Blues album from Bachman. The new album just didn't hit the spot for me, I'll give it another shot.

Lot of love for Guess Who.

Burton Cummings had one of the all time great singing voices ever in rock music.

Bachman's Heavy Blues album is really just a hard rock album in the BTO vein. And while Bachman's Vinyl Tap show can be interesting it can get a bit boring with his monotone voice (kind of like his singing) and all the name dropping he does. He's still a nice guy though and a good guitar player with a rather impressive collection and a love for the music.

Cummings was always a good singer though I don't care for much of his post Guess Who stuff.

"Undun" has a certain Classics IV vibe going for it.

But I have to put The Guess Who and BTO on my "B" list simply because they are from Canada. Other than Celine Dion, Canada will always be second tier.

Good point on his radio voice. I tend to prefer DJs that are more on the "bland" side. He might not be everyone's cuppa.

Actually Canada proved in the 1990's that they didn't need CanCon. It's basically a retirement income stream for Anne Murray, Blood Sweat & Tears, Guess Who, etc.

As much as I bag on Cancon, the 90s was a golden age for the idea. So much great music got air and video play during that time that might have been pushed aside by outside influences.
The problem with it is when stations that play stuff like classic rock have to stick to the rules, and then by necessity overplay stuff like BTO, Rush, etc.

Can't say I've ever heard Anne Murray on the radio, and wasn't BS&T a New York band?
