Collaborations have become a huge part of sneakers over the past 10 or 15 years, and one of the best when it comes to collaborations is Sweden's Sneakersnstuff. Founded in 1999 by Erik fa*gerlind and Peter Jansson,Sneakersnstuff has been putting their own spin onclassic sneakers since 2003 - and they have arguably created some of the best sneakers ever made. Barely three months into 2013,Sneakersnstuffhas already dropped some of the best releases of the year, including three collaborations with Reebok. This pastweek they released the Reebok Question "Crocus" which instantly sold out everywhere. With the buzz around their creations, we figured it was a great time to dive into the history of their collabs, so we reached out to Peter and he gave us theComplete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations.

Reebok Question x Sneakersnstuff "Crocus"

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (2)

Year: 2013

It's spring again! That down-pitched voice of Biz Markie always feels appropriate at this time of the year. Reebok Question was named after the big Question – Allen Iverson, could he live up to the expectations in the NBA. For us at Sneakersnstuff to be able to work on such an iconic sneaker as the Reebok Question is a huge honor. The crocus is among the first flowers to bloom in spring in Sweden. And after four months of snow and cold it warms any heart to see those purple and yellow flowers find their way through the melting snow. So to take the colors from the crocus and put them on a nice and rich suede upper felt just as clean nice and simple as we wanted to do this. The Sneakersnstuff x Reebok Question Mid "The Crocus" sold out instantly.

Reebok DMX Run 10 x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (3)

Year: 2013

2013 will be a great year for Reebok. For our second installment of an ongoing collaboration with Reebok we worked on the DMX Run 10. Don't think anyone has collaborated on these before (please correct me if I'm wrong). 'Air That Moves' -that was the original slogan for the Reebok Dynamax cushion back in the day. DMX is short for Dynamax, if you didn't know now you know. With a reflective 3M upper, these runners will light up the winter darkness in Scandinavia. Extremely comfy.

Reebok Classic Leather 30th Anniversary x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (4)

Year: 2013

Being a Reebok Certified Network partner is nice, especially when they invite you to design sneakers for them. For the Reebok Classic Leather 30th Anniversary we knew that we would be the first one out so we had the cold Swedish winter in mind when designing our version. Featuring a Swedish-colored Union Jack, Cordura upper with suede details, Thinsulate and Play-Dry lining, aluminum insoles (we tried to squeeze in as many premium materials except leather as possible). These sneakers are Alaska approved.

adidas Consortium ZX 700 x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (5)

Year: 2012

Over the years we've done a fair share of collaborations. This one was part of the very first Consortium collection for women. Since we've got lots of female sneakerheads visiting us, we wanted to give them a proper sneaker, not just another women's sneaker. Being no strangers to the ZX 700 (our first adicollab ever, remember?) and the fact that the ZX 700 has been super popular with both our female and male customers, we picked it again, this time with a luxurious handbag in mind. After several sample rounds the adidas team nailed it. They came out great. We made them all the way up to my size (Erik's got bigger feet, but the good folks at adidas sorted him out with some men's size 11 samples).

ASICS GT-II x Sneakersnstuff *Seventh Seal*

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (6)

Year: 2012

About one year after our first collaboration with ASICS it was time for another one. ASICS was about to bring back the GEL Saga II and they wanted us to work our magic on them.. We started brainstorming and came up with a black waterproof version inspired by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's classic movie The Seventh Seal, particularly the scene where a knight is playing a game of chess withDeath. Originally we called them the Black Death. When we saw the first samples of the retro GEL Saga we decided to go for the good ol' GT-II again. All of a sudden we remembered thatthe GEL Saga was the cheapest low-entry GEL runner ever while our favorite, the GT-II, was a top performance runner back in the day. So we took the Ingmar Bergman saga and applied it on the GT-II. 158 pairs were sold to the public. The launch party was held in an old underground nuclear reactor in Stockholm... check out the video:

Supra Owen x Sneakersnstuff 'Swedish Meatballs'

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (7)

Year: 2012

These were too nice not to produce. Matt Fontana and his team killed it with this one. Originally we sampled up the 'Curry' version and this version. We fell in love with both. This one was pretty hard to get hold of. In fact it never got released to the public. They where given away to friends and family of Supra. The reindeer leather of the upper is extremely smooth. It also came with a matching iPhone case in reindeer leather. Total production: 50 pairs.

New Balance 577 x Milkcrate Athletics x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (8)

Year: 2012

For this collaboration we invited or old friend Aaron LaCrate and his classicstreetwear brand Milkcrate Athletics. Once again we picked the 577.It's not that often that an american bran gets to work with New Balance England. We did two versions, one grown up white/grey version for the mature NB head andone colorful version as a nod to Milkcrate Athletics' bright signature colors. Both versions sold out very fast.

Supra Owen x Sneakersnstuff 'Curry'

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (9)

Year: 2012

When we first saw the samples of the new Owen, we decided that this was the one Supra style that we wanted to work on. Instead of a mesh nylon version we went for an all-grown-up version of the Supra Owen. We took the Supra Crown logo and made three Supra Crowns out of it. (One of Sweden's most famous national symbols are the Three Crowns - that's Tre Kronor in Swedish.) If you're a hockey fan you might have noticed the Three Crowns on the Swedish national team jersey. The curry part might have been slightly inspired by one of our favorite Dunks ever, the 'Curry' Dunk. It came with a very nice co-branded iPhone case. Total production: 365 pairs

ASICS GT-II x Sneakersnstuff 'Runestone'

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (10)

Year: 2011

I started working in a sporting goods store in the spring of 1989, and one of the first questions that I got from a customer was 'Have you got any ASICS GT-II's in stock?' Later that year I learned that lots of runners were on the hunt for the ASICS GT-II. I also learned that the reason why they were hunting them was the fact that ASICS had decided to stop manufacturing the GT-II simply because they lasted too long - some runners said almost 10 times longer than your average running shoe. More than 20 years after my first contact with the GT-II, ASICS Europe contacted us about doing a collaboration with them. We knew exactly what style we wanted to work on. The design is inspired by the runestones erected by the Vikings all over Mälardalen in Sweden during the fourth century. The Vikings used these stones to mark out their territory and honor their families, and they were regarded as symbols of power and glory. Total production: 312 pairs.

Ellesse Poli x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (11)

Year: 2011

Ellesse, the luxury sports brand from Italy, invited us to be a part of their original Fab Five project: A project where they invited the five best retailers in Europe according to Ellesse. We didn't have many material or color options for this project, so we went for a Falu red version of the Poli runner. "Falu red" is a specific red paint from the city of Falun. It is used on traditional red cottages all over Sweden. A co-branded paint brush came along with the shoes. Also Nash Money did a great sneaker display for us. Total production: 150 pairs.

Converse Chuck Taylor's All-Star Hi x Sneakersnstuff 'Lovikka'

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (12)

Year: 2010

A knitted sneaker? This was pre-Flynit, kids. This one took a long time to develop, and the Converse crew did a great job. The design is based on two icons: Chuck Taylor's All-Star basketball sneakers and Erika Aittamaa's Lovikka mittens. Everybody in Sweden knows about the Lovikka mitten, a knitted mitten with a tassel. The white version was supposed to be released just in time for Christmas 2009, but we ran into some trouble. We ended up releasing the white version on December 3rd 2010, it was snowing outside. People that had never ever bought a pair of sneakers in their life lined up for these. 220 pairs sold out instantly. One pair ended up at the Lovikka Museum in the village of Lovikka. The day after the release, they were national news. The biggest TV station in Sweden, TV4, featured them on their morning show. We had the phone ringing for weeks with people asking for those Lovikka sneakers. That made us think: hmm maybe we should do another colorway? We released the grey ones in 2012. The Lovikka mitten was manufactured in several different classic colorways, so let's hope for a third colorway of the Sneakersnstuff Lovikka Chucks. Total production: White: 300 pairs. Grey: I have no idea.

Reebok Workout Plus 25th x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (13)

Year: 2012

Another anniversary edition. Reebok wanted us to be a part of the Workout Plus 25th Anniversary. The inspiration for our version of the classic Reebok Workout Plus comes from the greatest animal in the Swedish woods - the moose. Famous for having a superior leather quality and great-tasting meat, the moose is very common in Sweden. Therefore the annual moose hunt is a very big thing for the hunters here. Actually, for many hunters the moose hunt is the only workout they'll get. Made out of fine moose leather.

Le Coq Sportif Arthur Ashe x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (14)

Year: 2011

This was a special project. Eric Sarin, Head of Le Coq Sportif, and Sneakersnstuff go way back. He was the guy that helped out us when we did our first two collaborations with PUMA. Eric called us up and wanted some help getting Le Coq Sportif back on the map. We flew down to their World Headquarters in Paris. To the table we brought our longtime friends and fellow sneaker lovers Brian and Edward Toft -in the sneaker world more famous as the brothers behind Hanon shop. Eric and his team let us go through their archives and I found this old Arthur Ashe tennis shoe. We also found an old track top that Yannick Noah wore during the early 1980s. For all you kids who don't know who Yannick Noah is, he is a legendary tennis player from France andthe father of Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls. We came up with idea to do the classic Arthur Ashe in its original colorway but in a super-premium leather with our store logos embossed very subtly on the tongue. And then we would do several different colorways in nubuck, matching the stripes of the Yannick Noah track top that we found. Le Coq Sportif WHQ is located in Paris Nord, Hanon is from Aberdeen, Scotland, in the northern part of the United Kingdom, and we're from the north of Europe so the project had the working title Project North or Nord(Le Projet Nord). The project got delayed due to distribution issues in Scandinavia. The Hanon version and the colorful ones got a proper release. Our version of the Arthur Ashe came out a little later in extremely low numbers, with fewerthan 12 pairs hitting the market.

PUMA Dallas x Sneakersnstuff x size?

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (15)

Year: 2010

One year after the 10-year anniversary of Sneakersnstuff, it was time for UK retailer size? to celebrate 10 years in business. As one of very few, we got invited to work on one part of a PUMADallas pack. Our version was inspired by the Swedish M90 camo uniform. They came in a M90 camo bag. Triple branded. PUMA made one, as in 1, matching bike for this release.

New Balance x Sneakersnstuff RGB Pack

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (16)

Year: 2009

I did a red pigskin version of the 577, Johan did a suede/mesh version of the 1500 in green, and Erik did an all-synthetic 1700 in blue. Red, green, blue - The RGB pack. Made in Flimby, England.

adidas Stockholm x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (17)

Year: 2009

Part of the adidas Consortium 'Your City' project. Once again the good folks at adidas wanted to work with us. The design brief this time was to add one color to the original Stockholm shoe. The original Stockholm shoe is blue and yellow, so we added grey. Grey as in grey sky, one thing you see a lot of in Stockholm during the fall. We did a Stockholm guide featuring the favorite Stockholm spots of the Sneakersnstuff crew.

PUMA Suede SNS 10 GOAT-pack

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (18)

Year: 2009

For our 10th anniversary we wanted to do 10 different PUMA Suedes. Then 10 became three. PUMA Suede is the greatest PUMA shoe of all time - the GOAT. Suede is Sweden in French. We did three classic Suedes in premium goatskin. The lining is a nod to the hemp Baskets we did in 2003. This time it said 124 instead 136. Manufactured in 124 pairs per colorway.

Lacoste René x Sneakersnstuff x Jonas Wiehager

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (19)

Year: 2009

We did quite a few collaborations during 2009 as we celebrated 10 years. With Lacoste, we did one multicolor version based on the SNS 10 year anniversary site, a micro site where each color represented a month. We posted daily news and trips down memory lane every single day for a whole year. We also invited our good friend and local street hero Jonas Wiehager aka Fat White Dude aka Mr. Stockholm. Jonas picked a black leather version that he applied his signature Superdrops technique on.

adidas Superstar 80s 3-Way Consortium Project

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (20)

Year: 2009

The result of a collaborative effort between Patta, ALIFE Rivington Club, LimiEDitions and Sneakersnstuff. Nobody really wanted to mess with the Superstar, can't remember why. I guess nobody wanted to be the one the that messed up the iconic Superstar. We kept it super clean. The Cordura upper made these so light. Very wearable. Came with several co-branded lace locks and a co-branded Cordura sneaker bag. 200 pairs were sold through the partners of Group One, and i think a few pairs ended up in Asia.

adidas Consortium Samba x Sneakersnstuff 3 -Way Project

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (21)

Year: 2009

Another part of the adidas Consortium 3-Way project. After the success of the aZX Consortium Project, adidas invited us to be a part of Group One of the 3-Way Project. Group One also included our friends from Patta, ALIFERivington Club and LimitEDitions. The design brief for each group was to work on the top five best-selling adidas sneakers of all time: Samba, Superstar, Stan Smith, Nizza and Forum. We invited the other stores to come and join us in Stockholm. We decided that we should do one style each and joined forces on a fifth style. Erik, Johan and I worked on the legendary Samba. Purple was the signature color of Johan at the time, and Erik had a pair of all-purple Zoom Havens so we went for all purple. The handwriting on the tongue tells the Sneakersnstuff story in Swedish and it belongs to our creative guy, Johan Undén aka Johnny Balle. Done.

Reebok The Pump x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (22)

Year: 2009

Reebok invited us to be a part of the Reebok Pump 20, the 20th anniversary of the Reebok Pump. 20 stores in the world got invited to the Reebok World Headquarters in Canton outside of Boston. Erik and Johan represented Sneakersnstuff. The original idea was to make a survival sneaker. We wanted to feature everything that you had in your old Rambo knife. That didn't work because of legal issues. The result was 31 pairs of super-warm wool and Thinsulate Pumps featuring the Swedish scout motto 'Alltid Redo' on the tongue.

Tretorn T56 SNS GTX

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (23)

Year: 2009

You thought Converse was old? Sweden'sTretorn was founded in 1891, and wasa teenager when Converse was born in 1908. If you're into tennis, Tretorn is not an unknown brand - they are actually the inventor of the tennis ball as we know it. And the great Björn Borg wore Tretorn's before he teamed up with those Italians. For this collaboration, we picked the Tournament tennis shoe from 1956 as our canvas. Tretorn let us pretty much do whatever we wanted on these so we took a shoe that normally is made out of unbleached white cotton and added a rough ripstop nylon upper, a Cordura-esque toebox, 3M reflective piping, SNS eyelets, multiple co-branded laces, and introduced Gore-Tex membrane on a Tretorn shoe for the very first time. The perfect summer sneaker (it rains a lot in Sweden). Purple was a favorite colorway among the Sneakersnstuff crew at the time so one of the outsoles was purple and the other one was green. They came in a nice, co-branded nylon bag We also did a matching New Era 59Fifty baseball cap for this collaboration.

New Balance 577 x Sneakersnstuff Round 3 'Erik'

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (24)

Year: 2008

Once again, Erik wanted to do something more colorful. Still very classy. Lots of E's in different colors (E is for Erik). Not sure if the final result actually was what he had in mind when he started this project, but I know they came out really nice and sold out very fast. Total production: 150 pairs

New Balance 577 x Sneakersnstuff Round 3 'Peter'

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (25)

Year: 2008

For the first time we were able to do pretty much whatever we wanted on the sole unit without having to buy 504 pairs. I did a premium black leather version with some 3M details. Tried to keep just the P (for Peter) of the ENCAP part on the sole but I had to feature the rest of the letters. Total production 150 pairs (wish we did more).

adidas ZX 450 Sneakersnstuff aZX Consortium Project

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (26)

Year: 2008

This is probably our most important collaboration to date. adidas invited us and a few of their Consortium partners to the World of Sports (the name of the adidas World Headquarters in the small village of Herzogenaurach in Bavaria, Germany). We got to meet and become friends with so many people in the industry that we have admired and still admire. We also met Markus Thaler, one of few people still alive that actually worked along side adi Dassler himself. I rarely get starstruck but I was totally starstruck when we met Markus, the man whodid the adidas Gazelle and the original ZX series. And celebrating the classic ZX series waswhat the aZX Consortium Project was all about - the alphabet according to adidas Originals. When Ben Preuss (the Vice President of adidas Originals at the time) and his right-hand man Dean Lokes took us aside from the rest of the gang and explained to us that they wanted Sneakersnstuff to represent the letter S in the aZX alphabet, we understood that it was one tough decision to make. They could have picked any store in the world to represent the letter S but they gave the most sought-after letter to Sneakersnstuff, Stockholm, Sweden. That was huge. Designwise Erik and I wanted to do a waterproof runner for the Swedish fall (it rains a lot in Sweden). We wanted to add Gore-Tex but that wasn't possible, so we went for a waterproof fake suede upper.

Reebok SNS 5000

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (27)

Year: 2008

The head of our website (Sneakersnstuff.com) Erik Jonsson, aka Thunder, is the mastermind behind this design, inspired by the traditional curbits painted wooden Dalcarlian Horse. The Dalcarlian Horse (that's Dalahäst in Swedish) was originally a budget toy for kids. Now it's one of the most famous symbols of Sweden. All I did on this project was to change the original name ERS 5000 to SNS 5000. ERS is short for Energy Return System. SNS is short for Sneakersnstuff. Total Production: 300 pairs.

New Balance 577 x Sneakersnstuff 'Peter' Round 2

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (28)

Year: 2007

For my second round, I used the same premium synthetic leather as New Balance used on the original 1500, adding some signature NB pigskin suede. Couldn't get proper grey or optical white leather lining for these, so Iwent with the closest thing available. For the first round we used the original 577 sole unit but this time we had our own white sole unit. Originally lots of people weren't that happy with us going for the all-white mid and outsole. They sold out in the end, so I guess a few people liked them. Total production 252 pairs.

New Balance 577 x Sneakersnstuff *Erik' Round 2

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (29)

Year: 2007

For Round 2 we asked New Balance if we could change the colorway of the outsole unit. Yes that was possible. But we had to make 504 sole units. That was quite a lot for us at the time, so we decided to go for the same sole (252 for Erik's design and 252 for my design). The Flimby factory doesn't have all the materials in the world, so when Erik asked for a pink silky smooth lining he had to source that himself. I remember a pic that someone took of Mr. [Kanye] West when he was looking at these during Paris fashion week. The first Yeezys that came out about a year later also had a pink lining I believe... Total production 252 pairs.

PUMA Clyde x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (30)

Year: 2007

An old-school basketball sneaker designed in Stockholm by Sneakersnstuff inspired by the original settlers of Sweden, the Sámi people, using the finest reindeer leather money could buy, originally designed by a German footwear company for an African-American New York Knickerbocker that had style both on and off court? Yes that's what this is. They retailed at almost three times as much as your average PUMA Clyde (they should have onlybeen twice as much, according to an anonymous PUMA source). The leather supplier normally suppliesluxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Hermès. The Nordic Museum, a museum dedicated to the cultural history and ethnography of Sweden, bought a pair for their collection. Five percentof the project's revenue went to the Sámi Youth. Total production: 660 pairs.

adidas ZX 700 x Sneakersnstuff

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (31)

Year: 2006

For our first collaboration with adidas, we did a brown/beige/gold/white version of the ZX 700 runner. The colorway was inspired by our Malmö store - yes, we've got two stores. One in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and one in Malmö located in the dirty south of Sweden. These were part of the adidas Tempo Range. Two UK stores, size? and Offspring, were also a part of the Tempo Range. We sold over 600 pairs of these, and we have no idea how many pairs adidas actually made.

New Balance 577 x Sneakersnstuff 'The Secret 577' Round 1

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (32)

Year: 2005

This was actually a major mistake. Erik's Round 1 samples were blue and yellow, perfect. When we received Erik's Round 1's the factory had changed the blue to mint green and they had also added some extra yellow. Not perfect... But we decided to release them anyway. It was still nice, even though it was a mistake. This was at a time when collaborations were pretty rare. We had a countdown clock on our or website for 'The Secret 577'. No pictures leaked until about 10 minutes before we launched them online. All 96 pairs sold out instantly.

New Balance 577 x Sneakersnstuff 'Peter' Round 1

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (33)

Year: 2005

We knew we wanted to work on the 577, a runner that I remember launching in 1989. Such a great shoe. As it was, we only had about 15 minutes to come up with something. The trip to England was 95 percent about doing a collaboration with NB UK and 5 percentFlimby factory tour focus. For NB UK it was the other way around - they weren't that used to collaborations. We hand picked the materials and learned that there weren't that many options. The Flimby factory is known for using nothing but premium materials. I wanted to keep my design classic. Slightly inspired by the classic 577 in navy and the 997 in grey. Total production: 96 pairs.

New Balance 577 x Sneakersnstuff 'Erik' Round 1

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (34)

Year: 2005

Designed by my longtime partner in crime, the artist formerly known as Erik Börjesson, Erik fa*gerlind. New Balance Sweden invited us to visit New Balance England and their legendary Flimby factory. After the grand tour of the factory we had about 15 minutes to come up with the design. Erik went for this one, inspired by the Swedish flag (and if I remember correctly he also got some inspiration from flag of the Canary Islands, the birthplace of Erik's father-in-law). They sold out very fast. About a year later a friend/customer sent us a picture of these from a re-seller shop in Tokyo, priced higher than a pair of OG Air Jordan 1's. Total production: 96 pairs.

PUMA SNS Basket Hemp

A Complete History of Sneakersnstuff Sneaker Collaborations (35)

Year: 2003

Our very first collaboration. We've always loved the PUMA Suede. Inspired by our first store exclusive for Sweden, the adidas Gazelle Hemp. This was 2003, kids -a year before Nike SB came out with their SB Dunk in hemp... After four years at the same address we moved the store to a bigger location just a block from the original Sneakersnstuff store. Manufactured in 136 individually numbered pairs as a nod to our original address, Åsögatan 136.
